EKISC - East Kootenay Invasive Species Council

Research

Research-1

Research is not a core program activity of the East Kootenay Invasive Species Council.

Occasionally EKISC participates in research and scientific studies, particularly those that may lead to improvements in efficiency and effectiveness of chemical or biological control methods of invasive plant species.

Research-2Currently, EKISC and the BC Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations are partners in a herbicide trial on Blueweed (Echium vulgare) in the Elko area (IPMA  # 2 - South Country).  Blueweed is a highly invasive species that can be very difficult to control.  Published literature on its control is also limited.

The field trial is comparing the effectiveness of treating a number of different herbicides on the species. The trial is also comparing the effectiveness of using various treatment timing windows on Blueweed.

It is hoped that at the completion of the trial, EKISC will be better able to control this species, using the most effective herbicide available and treating Blueweed at a time of the year that is optimal for control.
